Since its creation in 1990, the Virginia Disability Commission has served as a primary forum through which the needs and issues of people with disabilities can be addressed through the collaboration of members of the legislature, the Lieutenant Governor, the Governor's appointees, and the agencies of the Executive branch. The Commission works to accelerate effective state system change by requiring intergovernmental and interagency coordination, as well as stakeholder input on critical disability decisions. The Disability Commission provides a vehicle for advancing budget proposals and addressing policy issues within a vision for a service system that seeks to maximize the self-sufficiency of Virginians with physical and sensory disabilities.
